My press statement following the result to leave the European Union on 23rd June 2016
The British people have made it clear, through the ballot box, that they want to leave the European Union. This wish must be acted upon as soon as possible and without any ifs or buts. I fully respect that view and will play the fullest part in ensuring that their instructions are carried out. I will, accordingly, be pressing for an immediate implementation of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to ensure withdrawal with in the 2 years set out in the agreement.
I do not believe that we should be trying to delay this action, as UKIP and the Tories seem to be suggesting. It is imperative that, having asked the British people their views, we honour their response forthwith and stop any back tracking.
